Which boards to ‘try before you buy’ – with our partner Awayco

Meet our new Surf Travel partner: Awayco

Awayco is the world’s leading provider of surfboards for rent. Partnering with Awayco means we can make surf travel even more fun and hassle free for all our lady surfers! They have distribution from stores across the globe, including our Bali and Byron Bay Surf Getaways destinations, so now you don’t even have to bother taking a board with you when you travel on a Surf Getaway.

Try before you buy – a new surfboard

This is also a great opportunity if you want to try out different boards before you invest in that BIG purchase, or if you are transitioning from one board length or shape to another and are not too sure which one is best for you.

Most people don’t get to try a board before they buy – not many shops offer demo boards to take out to try. This results in people typically sticking with a board they’re comfortable with, and ‘make it work’ even when they’ve outgrown it.

Awayco’s surfboard rental model aims to change this, by offering surfboard rental globally in the major surf spots around the world. Awayco believes that experimenting with new boards allows you to adapt not only to the conditions, but to your current level of surfing. And we couldn’t agree more!

Here are some tips from our new friends at Awayco what boards they recommend you to try-before-you-buy – for different levels of surfers:

For Beginner Surfers they recommend to start with the Ocean and Earth Surf School Softboard, 9′ × 24 1/2″ × 4″ / 113l. They are great boards for learning because they’re soft (safety), high in volume (easier to paddle), wide (more stable) and even have a handle to make carrying the board easy.

Get it from Boardriders Echo Beach in Canggu.

For Intermediate Surfers they recommend to try out the Channel Islands Surfboards Water Hog 7/ 8′ × 22″ × 2 7/8″ / 58.1l. This is a great model for those who want to start transitioning from a softboard, or longboard, to a smaller size. Why would you want to do that? For more maneuverability. And because challenges are fun! It’s still got length and volume for ease of paddling, but doesn’t make you feel like you’re riding a cargo ship 😉

Book it at Onboard Byron Bay.

Advanced Surfers should try out the Haydenshapes Hypto Krypto 6′ 2″ × 20 3/4″ × 2 3/4″ / 38.39l The Hypto has been called “the one-board quiver” by many, as it’s enjoyed by everyone from intermediate to expert surfers. Its wide nose keeps the paddle power while the pulled in tail allows for increased maneuverability in waves big and small.

Book it at Awayco locations all over Bali.
